We’ll Crucify the Insincere Tonight

While I should be diametrically opposed to anything PANIC AT THE DISCO (PATD) puts out I usually find them charming, funny & even remotely talented, but a line must be drawn somewhere & that line comes in the form of singing perhaps the most beautiful song ever written, The Smashing Pumpkins, “Tonight, Tonight”. Seriously, stay the fuck away PATD. That is the only video that has made me well up with pseudo tears. Ok, they were real, fuck you.

The video directed by Jonathan Dayton & Valerie Faris (Little Miss Sunshine) is a remake of the old silent picture LeVoyage dans la lune (1902). It was actually filmed the same way. They used a 70-year-old, hand-cranked camera shooting only one angle on a single set. SO amazingly beautiful. Like looking at a Monet and feeling what he was trying to extract from that moment in time. Put that together with the words of Billy Corgan & a masterpiece is born.

My issue comes with bands like the aforementioned PATD covering a song that should never be covered. There are songs that have been covered and amazingly well. Novaflow covered THE ANIMALS version of, “HOUSE OF THE RISING SUN” & it was great. That song has been done by everyone though from Bob Dylan to Leadbelly. Tonight, tonight has never been remade because it’s the perfect song. The strings, the lyrics, the vocals, the drums…EVERYTHING! PERFECT!

PATD is a decent band, for what they are, which is a fad, a CULTURE CLUB. A band that’ll be remembered for catchy lyrics and tunes but nothing of real substance. Real music fans don’t clamor for that. Smashing Pumpkins come out with an album JULY 10 called “ZEITGEIST”. GET IT! It won’t measure up to, “MELLON COLLIE & THE INFINITE SADNESS”, but who cares? It’s the PUMPKINS. I’m a huge fan of covers, ME FIRST & THE GIMME GIMMES is one of my favorite bands, but please certain songs shouldn’t be covered.

This cover may go down as bad as William Shatner covering Elton Johns’, “ROCKET MAN”. Anyway, enough of my diatribe, enjoy. Remember…

“We’ll crucify the insincere tonight

We’ll make things right, we’ll feel it all tonight

We’ll find a way to offer up the night tonight

The indescribable moments of your life tonight

The impossible is possible tonight
